Night of Empowerment Volunteers

Basket of Care’s Night of Empowerment events provide venues for breast cancer survivors to come together for upbeat evenings of fun, socialization, and peer support. We host these events at salons, restaurants, tea houses, and other places where people with breast cancer can focus on personal wellness (emotional, mental, spiritual) rather than medical issues.

People with breast cancer will likely undergo surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, or biologic therapy in the course of treatment, times when the need for emotional support is critical because patients often feel alone, confused, and scared. Social support helps breast cancer survivors fight back and stay in remission far longer than people with few emotional outlets. Cancer researchers have found that breast cancer patients benefit medically from meaningful emotional support networks. Nights of Empowerment events provide a critical period of respite in the cancer journey.

I had my first mammogram on August 2, 2011 and by August 19 was diagnosed with breast cancer. In September, still numb at my first meeting with my doctor, the receptionist brought me a black and pink bag. She talked to me as a fellow survivor and told me about Baskets of Care. It brought me to tears. Women diagnosed with breast cancer need what Baskets of Care does. I know I did.

With gratitude, Veronica
